Chapter 24

The Crown Tower Hotel

IT WAS NEARING 4 am when Rory walked out of his bedroom, clad in one of the fluffy white robes provided by the hotel. His bare feet barely made a sound as he crossed the carpet to the small kitchenette. He stopped in his tracks. Freshly brewed coffee? The sound of light laughter caught his attention. Rory looked out to the living room area and saw Erin Mayfield sitting in one of the plush chairs in a group of four set around a coffee table.

She was also wearing a white robe, her feet were tucked up under her and a steaming mug of coffee was in her hand, "Why couldn't I take a room with a man who likes to walk around in the night in the nude, instead of a big robe?"

Rory shook his head as he went to the coffee maker and began to brew a coffee as well, "Just lucky, I guess."

"Lucky for who? Not for me, that's for sure."

"Lucky for me," Rory said as the coffee began to pour into his cup. "This way you don't see my short-comings and I retain an air of mystery."

Now Erin shook her head, "Isn't the woman supposed to be the one who retains the air of mystery?"

"That's a little chauvinistic, isn't it?" Rory paused and looked over at Erin, "Or...in your case...is that supposed to be womanistic?"

"That's not even a word, Steele."

Taking his mug of coffee in hand, Rory doctored it with cream and sugar and then walked across to one of the other plush chairs.

Erin watched him through the rising steam from her mug as she took a sip.

Rory sat down, stretching his bare legs out. A cell phone rang and Rory quickly set his coffee on the table and reached into the pocket of his robe, pulling his cell phone out. He pressed a button and held the phone in the palm of his hand, "Hello. You're on speaker."

"Good morning, it's Mandy."

Erin unfolded her legs, a glimpse of thigh flashing as she sat up in the chair.

"You're up early, Mandy. Or you've never been to bed," Rory said. He winked at Erin.

"Well, you answered your phone very fast so that tells me you're not sleeping either. Should we exchange stories...?"

Rory shook his head, a smile on his lips, "No. Let's just forget it. What have you got for us?"

Mandy turned serious, "We were able to get behind the firewalls at Central Mercy Hospital and we have the autopsy for David Wallace Upchurch."

Rory straightened up a bit, "They've done the autopsy already? I thought it would take a few days at least."

"The notes show the police insisted on getting the autopsy done quickly. And the doctor...let's see...Doctor Adiela...he seemed to want it done quickly as well. He put a priority on it, in fact."

"Does it say why?" Rory asked.

"Death under suspicious circumstances was the reason given."

Rory nodded to himself, "That would make sense. Adiela said Upchurch would recover. He might be worried about covering his ass for insurance purposes.
